Democratic values: Survey and poll

Much has been said over the last couple of days about the Democratic party. Everyone has an opinion. I'd like to hear you're answer to the question: What are the values of the Democratic Party.

Last November we attended a local Democratic committee meeting. Local Party regulars mostly. New to the meeting, our Dean contingent,  one local Kucinich supporter ( formerly a Green ) and his friend from Michigan.

After the minutes from the previous meeting were read, we were invited to discuss the nine page strategic plan. The shortest being the:

Mission Statement

The mission of the Boone County Democratic Party is two fold:

    First, to identify, articulate, and convey the values of the Boone County Democratic Party
    Secondly, to elect Democratic Leaders to the office who embrace these values.

Polite applause.

Then someone asked, "Hmm, ok What are the values of the Democratic Party?"

Heads swiveled, an embarrassed silence, tiny coughs, fear permeated the air mixed with hope someone would come Dashing out with a Brilliant reply.

More silence punctuated with the soft sound of people shrinking into their seats like the days when you prayed the teacher wouldn't call on you....and prayed even harder someone would answer it completely so everyone could move on to the next subject.

Finally a voice stammered out, "We stand up for the rights of ... of... of those, of,  for the rights of everyone."

Collective nodding, and yeah, yeah that's right. There was a bit of debate and analysis,  but none of it sounded hopeful, fiery, or enthusiastic. The chairman then said, "I think it's an important question. One we should have a distinct answer for. Why don't we all think about it and next meeting talk about it." Relief hovered like a light mist when it was over. An air of quiet unspoken defeat.

My questions to you are:

How highly do you rate the success of the Democratic party on fulfilling those values?
